E! Channel's 'The Royals' Casts a Prince

William Moseley

E! Channel and Lionsgate Television decided to team up on a strange series, crossing William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' with the present-day media frenzy surrounding the British Royal Family. What they came up with is 'The Royals,' a series about a fictional Royal family, set in the present day, with the characters and plotline loosely based on 'Hamlet.' And as any Shakespeare fan knows, that particular tragedy is all about the Prince...

William Moseley has been cast as the Prince in 'The Royals.' Moseley joins Elizabeth Hurley, who had already been cast as the Queen. Moseley is best known as Peter Pevensie from the 'Chronicles of Narnia' series of feature films, including 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.' Hurley is best known as the crush of every man who was a teenager when 'Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery' Elizabeth Hurleycame out in 1997; she has more recently recurred on 'Gossip Girl.'

'The Royals' is being billed as "a tale of men and women corrupted by power, wealth and desire." Moseley will play Liam, the younger brother of the beloved Prince Robert. When Robert is killed in a military training accident, Liam is thrust into a spotlight. Sexy, charming and smart, he’s in love with a young American woman, Ophelia, who helps him cope with the loss of his brother and his new position as the next King of England. Liam bristles at the strict rules, which govern the monarchy: being told what to say, where to go and how to it. At the root of it all, Liam has lived in Robert’s shadow and worries that he is not a credible successor. Hurley plays Liam's mother, Queen Helena.

So we can see the similarities to 'Hamlet' (such as the love-interest being named Ophelia) but aside from that obvious trigger, this seems to follow its own path. That is, of course, unless there is some suspicion that Robert's untimely death may not have been an accident at all...

'The Royals' was put together by Mark Schwahn, creator of 'One Tree Hill.' The pilot for the hour-long drama series is presently in production for E!.
