Danger! :rap beat: Danger! Fresh off of his very well received stint as substitute host of Comedy Central's 'The Daily Show,' British actor and comedian John Oliver is set to make a triumphant return to NBC's 'Community.' Fans will no doubt recall that Oliver appeared on a recurring basis as Professor Ian Duncan during the first two seasons of the cult sitcom, before his character mysteriously vanished from the show. 'Community,' being the meta-heavy show that it is, even called direct attention to his unexplained absence in season four's 'Intro to Felt Surrogacy.' Maybe now we'll find out where the heck he's been for the past two years.
Oliver is set to reprise his role in at least six episodes of 'Community's 13 episode fifth season. Details on what exactly Professor Duncan will be doing are as yet unavailable, but I highly doubt that the currently red hot Oliver would return to the series for half the season unless he was going to be a major factor in the plot. We already know Donald Glover will only be taking part in five episodes this year, so perhaps Oliver is being brought back to help fill Troy's void.
Season five also marks the equally triumphant return of formerly deposed 'Community' creator Dan Harmon as showrunner, and will feature previously announced guest stars Walton Goggins (Justified), Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad), and Rob Corddry (returning to his role as Jeff's unscrupulous former colleague at the law firm.)
The premiere date for 'Community's fifth season is still TBA, although we can be sure it probably won't make air until at least 4-5 months after NBC initially says it will. Here's to Christmas episodes awkwardly airing in March! Are you excited for John Oliver's 'Community' return?
