‘Dancing With the Stars’ Premiere: Bill Nye Earns Lowest Score with ‘Painful’ Cha-Cha
Last night, ABC’s hit reality show ‘Dancing With the Stars’ premiered with its 17th season. While some stars had major hits, others had major misses, like Bill Nye, the Science Guy.
As you can see for yourself by watching the video below, Bill Nye seemed to put all of his heart and soul into his very first dance -- the Cha-Cha -- with professional Tyne Stecklein. Bill called their partnership “the best example in the history of beauty and the geek.”
Despite having swing dancing skills, the science-themed Cha-Cha wasn’t the perfect formula for the TV star. He even admitted, ”We’re gonna produce a Cha-Cha experience like you’ve never seen fill you with joy, or it will sort of be an unwatchable minute and eight seconds.”
It proved to be the latter, resulting in some harsh comments from judges Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli. For example, Len remarked that the dance was “like being waxed --painful when it happened and lovely when it was over.” Bruno noted “this formula’s not going to get you the Nobel Prize.”
Unlike Bruno and Len, judge Carrie Ann Inaba had some nice comments for Bill. As she told him, “Bill, you’re the kind of contestant that makes ‘Dancing With the Stars’ the special show that it is.” She continued to note that yes, he needs to work on his footwork, but he’s the “heart of the show.”
He ended up with the lowest score of the night -- a 14 out of 30.
Joining Bill at the bottom of the scoreboard were NFL player Keyshawn Johnson with a 17 and comedian Bill Engvall with an 18. On the other hand, Monday’s premiere proved to fare well for ‘Glee’ star Amber Riley, as she earned the highest score for her Cha-Cha with partner Derek Hough -- a 27! The other stars fell in the score range of 21 to 24.
