‘Modern Family’ star Sofia Vergara will work with her entertainment-marketing firm, Latin World Entertainment, and Ben Silverman’s Electus Entertainment, to produce a half-hour comedy called ‘Speak American.’ FOX has purchased the comedy.
The show, created by writers Andrew Lenchewski (USA’s ‘Royal Pains’) and Benjamin Brand (IFC’s ‘Bollywood Hero’), was originally developed for USA, and centered on a character of European decent.
The premise will now focus on a Latin-american accent reduction teacher named Aviles, who hires a stranger with unconventional methods to teach her class.
Accent reduction classes, sometimes called elocution modification lessons, focus on teaching native sound systems by changing the way someone moves their mouth, or the cadence of their speech. The crazy stranger’s methods will somehow go beyond these traditional methods.
Latin World Entertainment and Electus are already partnered for ‘Killer Women,’ about a character named Molly Parker who is the only female Texas Ranger—with beauty and brawn, she knows how to get the job done. The show stars Tricia Helfer and will premiere on ABC sometime in 2014.
Silverman of Electus, who also produced ‘Ugly Betty,’ spoke about the partnership with Latin World Entertainment. “This marks the continued expansion of our relationship with Sofia and Luis as we continue to build Electus’ investment in Latin programming.”
Vergara’s firm has been growing lately, recently partnering with CNET for a Spanish-language tech news site.
