Cote de Pablo on ‘NCIS’ Exit: ‘I Left Under My Terms, and That Was Wonderful’
Last night, ‘NCIS’ fans tuned into the Season 11 premiere, and of course, the beginning of Cote de Pablo’s farewell after eight seasons as Ziva David. The news of her departure still has fans reeling, so maybe this interview with TV Guide Magazine will settle rumors and somewhat ease heartache.
Warning: if you haven’t seen last night’s episode, or don’t want to know Ziva’s fate, read no further!
There still hasn’t been an official statement as to why de Pablo is leaving the hit CBS series, but as she revealed, “As far as my decision to leave, that's a personal thing, and I'd rather leave it at that. The idea of leaving was not something I toyed around with for a long time. It was an overwhelmingly hard thing — at times terrifying.”
Even though she remains mum on the reason, one thing remains true: she’s not leaving for another TV or movie project, “Leaving ‘NCIS’ was not planned, so there is no plan. If I were panicking now, it would defeat the purpose. I need to get really excited about something, because for eight years I was really excited about this character. I don't want to start anything unless it's like that."
De Pablo also noted that she’s happy to not “leave fans hanging” and that she got to leave "under [her] terms, and that was wonderful.” She also touched on her last day of filming that took place on “a quiet, intimate set,” where she shot her very last scene with co-star Michael Weatherly, who also plays Ziva’s partner and love interest, Tony DiNozzo.
“My first scene ever in the bullpen was with Michael, and my goodbye scene was with Michael,” she said. “I feel like that was a beautiful way of ending — for now, certainly — a beautiful chapter between these two."
As some might have noticed, she did say “for now,” so can we hope for a Ziva return? "The greatest thing about this last episode is that Ziva doesn't die," de Pablo revealed. "As long as a character doesn't die, the character can always come back. Not that it would actually matter, because we bring back characters from the dead all the time on ‘NCIS’!"
As we saw last night, there have already been plenty of heartwarming Tiva moments, and judging from the promo below for next week’s final Ziva episode, it looks like we’ll get even more! Ahem...and finally a kiss! I’m not quite ready to bid Ziva farewell, but I can’t complain, especially when her last story is very Tiva-focused.
