America Ferrera is set to once again lead an hourlong drama, returning to TV this time for CBS with ‘Damascus.’
As first reported by Deadline, Ferrera will star as a righteous, determined nun who happens to practice law. The yet to be named character helps out those who cannot help themselves, but ends up teaming with a rich lawyer, aiding those in need while fighting against secret corporate entities and similarly evil powers. It's not yet determined if her colleague is male or female.
Ferrera will be an executive producer of the show alongside Teri Weinberg, who previously worked on ‘The Office’ and ‘The Tudors.’ Written and produced by Nick Osborne, the pilot is guaranteed to make it to air after CBS won out following rigorous bidding.
The 29-year-old actress famously spent four years as the titular idealist on the ABC dramatic comedy, ‘Ugly Betty,’ where she donned glasses and braces to play a character visibly different than her fashion magazine coworkers. The show was cancelled in 2010, and since then Ferrera has taken time to finish her collegiate studies at USC.
The actress will make an appearance on the small screen elsewhere on CBS this year, as she reprises a small role on ‘The Good Wife,’ playing the character Natalie Flores who had a three-episode arc in 2011. Ferrera has also done several features over the past few years, voicing a character in the animated children’s film ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ and its sequel.
A passionate nun who moonlights as a lawyer would seem a marked departure.
