Fans are finally going to see the relationship between Rumplestiltskin and his father on ABC’s Disney-inspired drama ‘Once Upon a Time.’
According to TVGuide.com, British actor Stephen Lord (‘Shameless,’ ‘EastEnders’) will portray Rumple’s father, who is known to be a “coward” and who didn’t have the best relationship with his son. Hmm...like father, like son? Rumple also doesn’t have an all-loving relationship with his own son, Neal/Baelfire.
Unfortunately for Rumple, he became a coward like his father (something he strived not to become), when he purposely harmed himself to avoid a prophecy predicting he would die during the ogre war. If that’s not enough, he’s also proved to be a coward as a father. After all, he did choose to remain the Dark One and eventually abandoned his own son.
As for Lord’s character, he will pop up in at least one episode, which is said to air Sunday, Nov. 17, where we’ll learn why he never received a “Father of the Year” award.
Executive producer Edward Kitsis recently discussed the complex father-son relationship with TVGuide.com, "We've hinted in the past that [Rumple’s] father was a coward and that his father's name was something that haunted him and that his father left him. This is a man who wants to break the cycle of his past. He wants to be a good father, but it's like that quote, 'I can resist everything but temptation,' so that's also his weakness."
We got a little taste of Rumple’s father in last night’s episode, when Peter Pan threw it in Rumple’s face that his own father even left him, so why shouldn’t Neal/Baelfire do the same? It will be interesting to see Rumple’s past, which has strongly contributed to his demeanor.
‘Once Upon a Time’ airs Sundays at 8/7c.
