'The Following's' first season came to an explosive ending back in April, with a conclusion that left Ryan (Kevin Bacon) and Claire (Natalie Zea) in very immediate danger from Ryan's ex-girlfriend Molly (Jennifer Ferrin) -- but one which left Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) apparently dead when he was trapped in an exploding lighthouse.
Of course, the fact that there is a second season at all seems to indicate that Carroll isn't dead.
A new poster for the show's second season features Ryan Hardy's face in a bloody handprint. "Obsession Is Killer," the poster's tagline reads.
Compare that to FOX's official synopsis for 'The Following' Season 2: "In Season 2, 'The Following' will catch up with Ryan Hardy (Golden Globe Award winner and Emmy Award nominee Kevin Bacon) in the wake of a horrific new murder spree. The FBI calls on Ryan and Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore) to speak with the lone survivor, Lily (Connie Nielsen, 'Boss,' 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'), in order to help them solve the case. Ryan is reluctant to re-engage with the FBI, but finds a valuable ally in his niece, Max (Jessica Stroup, '90210'), an NYPD cop working in the Intel Division. As the investigation proceeds, Ryan crosses paths with several complicated individuals, including Luke (Sam Underwood, 'Dexter') and Mandy Lang (Tiffany Boone, 'Beautiful Creatures'), which furthers his suspicion that Joe Carroll’s (James Purefoy) reign of terror is far from over."
It looks like Ryan is going to become obsessed with the idea that Joe Carroll is still alive. It makes sense, especially considering how prevalent Carroll's following remained even after his death -- though speaking of that, there's no mention of what happened to Claire. Does her death lead to Ryan's continued obsession?
Also interesting: the poster declares that the show's return will happen in January, despite previous indications that Season 2 will premiere on Feb. 18. Has another schedule change-up subtly happened?
