The bad news is 'Happy Endings' is still canceled. The good news: one of the ensemble comedy's standouts has signed on for a new series!
Yesterday, USA Network revealed that Eliza Coupe, best known for her roles in the ill-fated ABC series and one of the few bright points of 'Scrubs' later years, has signed on as the lead in a new comedy series for USA.
'Benched' revolves around career-driven attorney Nina who suffers a very public nervous breakdown after losing out on a major promotion at her elite private firm. She picks up the pieces of her personal and professional life, taking on a new role as a public defender to fight for her fellow underdogs, quickly discovering that legal battles are not exactly fought on a level playing field.
The series is created and written by 'Trophy Wife' actress Michaela Watkins and 'The Groundlings' Damon Jones. The news gets even better when we factor in that the former showrunner of Starz' under-appreciated 'Party Down,' John Enbom, will be assuming the same role on the new series. Enbom, Watkins and Jones will all serve as producers should the pilot be picked up for a series order.
Neither Enbom or Coupe have the greatest track record for bringing in the ratings, but both have a natural knack for comedy. Hopefully with USA making a strong push for more original comedy series they'll give this new series more of a chance than ABC and Starz did.
