Julia Louis Dreyfus can safely be called an A-lister on television, especially when it comes to comedy. She proved this, episode after episode on Seinfeld, and followed it up with a fairly competent performance in ‘New Adventures of Old Cristine’. This time around, she once again, probably wants to keep her viewers craving for more, which is exactly why she has put in a lot of research into the role she shall be playing in the new HBO comedy series called Veep. She shall in the show be portraying the role of Selina Meyer, who is the Vice President of the United States of America. For her role as the Vice President, Julia learnt the first thing one has to learnt after being elected to a public office, which is to pretend answering any question that is thrown to you, but actually, not really answering them.
In order to perfect this art of answering without actually giving an answer, Julia reveals that she watched hours of C-SPAN. She also makes an observation from her study that, politicians are a natural at this particular skill, some more than others. She admits that in today’s day and age of 24-hour media scrutiny, politicians are public figures, who have to be very careful about what they say and how they conduct themselves. The show is basically a satire which looks at politicians, when they are away from the glare of the flashbulbs and video cameras, which in other words means, it shows what politicians actually want to say but can’t, out of the fear of jeopardizing their position. The show also focuses on how little an importance the position of the vice president is given in the American democratic process, thus revealing the various indignities faced by someone in that position, resulting in hilarious situations.
Julia has reportedly shot for eight episodes of the show, and is surely hoping to shoot for many more. It wouldn’t be surprising if, Julia through this show actually manages to give the position of the Vice President the respectability and attention, it actually deserves.
