Ladies, lords, valets, butlers, head housekeepers, ladies maids and all those wishing they could dine or spend a night at Downton Abbey, gather ‘round for some fantastic news. ITV, the U.K. network, has renewed the British period drama for a fifth season!
‘Downton Abbey’ has become an international sensation and is set to make its triumphant return next fall in the U.K. Unfortunately, the series won’t be returning to the U.S. until January 2015 on PBS.
“As American audiences ready themselves for the January 5th premiere of Season 4, our devoted 'Downton' fans will rest easy knowing that a fifth season is on the way,” said Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton.
Creator Julian Fellowes will return to write and produce the fifth season, in addition to being produced by Carnival Films’ chief Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge.
“Like millions of other ‘Downton’ fans, I can’t wait to see what’s next for the Crawley family," Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS, said. "We’re proud to be the home of this extraordinarily entertaining series, and, along with our stations, we look forward to sharing Season 5 with U.S. audiences.”
‘Downton Abbey’ hasn’t even aired its fourth season in the U.S., but this is great news for fans of the show. The series has been airing in the U.K., and it just wrapped its fourth season tonight earning an average of 11.8 million viewers. A special Christmas episode is also set to air at some point.
“Audiences have enjoyed their regular Sunday evening visits back to ‘Downton’ once again this autumn and we are thrilled to produce a new series of the show next year,” Neame, ‘Downton’s executive producer and Carnival’s managing director, said. "We promise all the usual highs and lows, romance, drama and comedy played out by some of the most iconic characters on television. All the actors and makers of the show continue to be humbled by the extraordinary audience response and want to take the show from strength to strength next year.”
For those stateside, we’ll have to wait until Sunday, Jan. 5 at 9/8c for Season 4, but are you excited for Season 5 of the hit drama?
