Hello all! Chances are if you're reading this it means you, much like myself, are addicted to TV. You just can't ever get enough of that small screen action! Well, I'm here to tell you that I feel your pain and would like to help you in your noble quest for TV knowledge, which is why I've taken it upon myself to create this fun, weekly feature. Every week, I will dig up new and interesting facts about a show and share them with you right here. So sit back, relax, and let the trivia madness commence!
Why don't we have a deeper look into two of the best crime-solving partners in the business: 'Castle's very own smooth-talking author Rick Castle and his muse Detective Kate Beckett. For over five years now, we've watched these two uncover the truth of hundreds of murders thanks in large part to their excellent teamwork and undeniable chemistry. Yup, getting justice has never looked so good, however, there's still so much we have to learn about this gang of merry detectives (and their writer sidekick). Such as...
Did You Know:
1. It took 125 actresses to decide on the perfect Kate Beckett.
That's right — poor Nathan Fillion had to read with 125 different women in order to find his perfect leading lady. That's a lot of people. Not to mention a lot of line-reading. (Though you gotta admit it was well worth the effort!)
2. Speaking of which, Stana Katic, who plays Kate Beckett, was hired thanks in large part to a blouse.
Let me explain…the actress had just gotten out of hair and makeup for the final callback between her and one other woman, when she realized she was wearing a blouse that was way too long. After grabbing a pair of scissors, she asked Fillion if he could cut in a straight line to make her blouse shorter. He said he could try. The producers witnessed this comical interaction and gave Katic the part. Clothes: saving careers on a daily basis.
3. Detective Ryan's on-screen wife is also his off-screen wife.
Juliana Dever, the actress who plays Ryan's wife on the show, is actually Seamus Dever's real life wife as well. Hence why they have the same last name. (I think I'm ready for my detective badge…or at least one of those bullet proof vest things like Castle has.)
4. This show is a big fan of chess parodies.
For example, in the Nikki Heat novels, Castle names his fictional counterpart Jameson Rook. In chess, "castle" and "rook" are interchangeable names for the same piece. Clever, right? Even the name "Castle" itself is a shout out to the name of the real best-selling novelist, Stephen King, whose surname also happens to be a chess piece. Checkmate!
5. Castle's apartment is the same set that was used for the show 'Moonlight.'
It served as the lead character Mick's apartment in the short-lived series. Though, to be honest, I'd find this way more interesting if we were talking about 'Moonlighting' and not 'Moonlight.' Sorry, but a human Bruce Willis trumps a vampire Alex O'Loughlin every day of the week.
6. Detective Ryan has a secret man crush on Castle.
Or at least his books, anyway. At least once in every episode of Season 1, there is a scene with Ryan holding a copy of one of Castle's books, which is either super adorable or super creepy. Maybe both! Either way, someone get this guy a Kindle Fire for Christmas.
7. 'Firefly' gets quite a bit of recognition on the show.
Hard core Nathan Fillion fans have probably recognized that the creators of 'Castle' insert several allusions to the actor's former TV series 'Firefly.' For example, in the episode 'Vampire Weekend,' Castle kicks off the episode by appearing in his actual 'Firefly' costume. Subtle? No. Brilliant to behold? You bet! (If you've never watched 'Firefly' you should definitely get on that ASAP. Captain Malcolm Reynolds 4-eva!)
8. Actress Stana Katic can speak four languages.
This includes Serbian, French, English, and Italian. She can also speak in British, Irish, Eastern European, Italian, Spanish, Greek, and South African accents. Is there a badge for that? If not, there's certainly an app. You know she would totally dominate in the Accents and Impressions category in 'Heads Up' (aka the best app ever). Talk about impressive.
9. Susan Sullivan, who plays Castle's mother Martha, used to be a Playboy Bunny.
All together now…"WHAT?!?!" Yes indeed, the actress spent the latter part of her college years (1963-64) working as a legit Playboy Bunny. Anyone else really want to see Hugh Hefner guest star on the show now? No? Just me?
10. Nathan Fillion is deaf in one ear.
It's a little random, I know, but still an interesting fact that I personally had no idea about. Did you? At the 2012 Comic-Con it was revealed that the actor had lost all hearing in his left ear back in 1973, though the cause of how this came about remains unclear. (If you know anymore details about it, feel free to sound off in the comments below!)
