Let’s all give a warm “Aloha!” to Chi McBride. Today, CBS announced ‘Hawaii Five-0’ has promoted the actor to a series regular.
McBride, known for his roles on ‘Boston Public’ and ‘Golden Boy,’ first appeared during the Season 4 premiere as Captain Lou Grover (the head of SWAT on the Island), who recently moved his family from Chicago to Oahu.
“Well, I know this sounds corny, but the only thing I ever wanted in my career was to be on CBS, the home of my idol Jackie Gleason,” said McBride. “I finally made it to the Tiffany Network on ‘Golden Boy,’ shooting scenes on the same stage where ‘The Honeymooners’ was filmed. CBS graciously invited me to be a member of the cast of ‘Hawaii Five-0,’ and it’s been wonderful. The cast, crew and production have been so welcoming to me, and so my love affair with CBS continues.”
At first, McBride’s Grover didn’t get along with Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) and the Five-0 task force team, but after last week’s episode, the two started to warm up to one another. So, the news of McBride’s promotion makes a lot of sense. If you ask me, the chemistry between McBride and O’Loughlin is fantastic.
For those who don’t know, McBride’s character is based on the character from the original ‘Five-0’ series starring Jack Lord and James MacArthur.
“After his first guest spot, we knew we had something special here with Chi playing Captain Lou Grover,” executive producer Peter Lenkov said. “He just fit seamlessly into the fabric of ‘Hawaii Five-0’ and viewers are enjoying the spirited, if sometimes antagonistic, interaction between him and McGarrett. We are so thrilled to welcome Chi into our Ohana.”
