NBC’s ‘The Blacklist’ Earns Season 2 Renewal

Here’s some good news for fans of the NBC drama ‘The Blacklist.’ The series starring legend James Spader will return for a second season!

‘The Blacklist’ revolves around Spader’s criminal mastermind Raymond “Red” Reddington, Megan Boone’s FBI Agent Elizabeth “Lizzie” Keen, Diego Klattenhoff’s rough and tough Donald Ressler, and many, many other talents.

Since Episode 1, the series has been doing wonders for the network, especially in ratings, so it’s no surprise ‘The Blacklist’ will come back for a second run with 22 episodes. The series even earned an early full-season order in October (after just two episodes!). Who doesn’t love watching Spader portray Red every week?

“The success of ‘The Blacklist’ demonstrates that inspired storytelling is alive and well in broadcast television, and I’m impressed on a daily basis by this creative team’s imagination and the extent to which they will go to capture this grand vision on film,” NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said. “With gratitude to both our partners at Sony Pictures Television and our NBC development executives who took a great script and shepherded it into a great series, I hope that Red Reddington never runs out of names to bring down on his list!”

Last night, ‘The Blacklist’s fall finale aired, but no worries because the series will return in January with three new episodes beginning Jan. 13.

"“The success of ‘The Blacklist’ demonstrates that inspired storytelling is alive and well in broadcast television, and I’m impressed on a daily basis by this creative team’s imagination and the extent to which they will go to capture this grand vision on film,”", Um yeah, sure. Bit of a stretch. Nothing like say Hell on wheels, but entertaining in a predictable way. That is always the issue with television, predictability. Still it has improved since the first episodes.

Although the final episode raised a few questions such as who are those shadowy figures who have more power (and better tech) than the FBI and the US government (or are they just another "Division" of the government, ala Nikita)? Of course, having all around good guy Alan Alda play the face of the organization that could reach into the middle of the FBI's black ops site to retrieve Red just makes it even murkier. The show of course still leaves the question of "who's your daddy" open at the end as well. Even though Red denied being Lizzie's father there was that very long dramatic pause which could mean he's lying to protect her. Then, of course, what's the deal with her husband? etc, etc., all of which serves as side plots to distract the viewer from the fact that the real plot is still to be revealed. In the meantime the characters run around in true government bureaucratic style blowing things up, shooting people, and being generally pompous and arrogant. I'm a fan of the genre and for the moment I'm willing to suspend belief that the government's best and brightest couldn't have figured out the connection between Red and Lizzie in order to use it as leverage against him. At the moment I'm kind of watching it as a kind of Mission Improbable just to see what the writers come up with as plot twists to take down the bad guys each episode.
