E!'s new pilot 'Songbyrd' just got a whole lot prettier. That's because '80s heartthrob -- and 'Pretty in Pink' co-star -- Andrew McCarthy is set to direct the pilot episode, according to Deadline.
This will be McCarthy's first pilot directing project, although the actor-director has been making his mark as a TV director recently with stints on 'Orange is the New Black' and 'Gossip Girl.'
McCarthy is replacing the project's original director, Michael Morris ('Smash,' 'Brothers & Sisters') who left the show over a month ago amid a tabloid scandal that featured the married director kissing his 'Smash' co-star Katharine McPhee (who's also married).
Though McCarthy was once part of the famed "Brat Pack," he's enjoyed a pretty much scandal-free existence, except for that time he hung out with a dead guy for the weekend. Oh, wait. That was just 'Weekend at Bernie's' - another McCarthy classic. So, his transition should be drama-free.
'Songbyrd' stars Bethany Joy Lenz ('One Tree Hill') as Lauren Byrd, a songwriter who is based loosely on Diane Warren. Warren is the Grammy-winning songwriter responsible for giving us songs such as "Un-Break My Heart" and "Because You Loved Me." You know, the uplifting stuff. The show is one of E!’s first two scripted pilots, and you can be assured it will feature what E! and Warren are known for: romance and drama.
