Ever since news broke about Kerry Washington's pregnancy back in October, fans have been chomping at the bit to know how exactly 'Scandal' would choose to deal with their leading lady's baby bump. And now it seems that the network has finally come up with a solution.
TVLine reports that ABC has decided to trim the third season's episode order from 22 to 18. And while no official explanation for the significant cutback was given, it’s pretty clear that Washington's real-life pregnancy had quite a bit to do with it.
The actress is due to give birth sometime this spring, which would've made shooting those final four episodes next to impossible, at least without incorporating it into the storyline, which apparently Shonda Rhimes didn't want to do.
And according to the site's sources, the idea of writing Olivia out of the show for an extended period of time was completely out of the question — something I think we all can definitely agree with. The show just wouldn't be the same without our beloved Olivia Pope.
But regardless of how necessary the reason may be, it's hard to not feel bummed about being robbed of so much 'Scandal'-y goodness. Next week's fall finale will mark the show's tenth episode, which means only eight episodes remain when the show returns on Feb. 27. (*starts weeping in fetal position on the floor*)
