Having appeared in nearly all the episodes on Season 1 of the FX crime drama ‘The Bridge,’ the network announced that Emily Rios and Matthew Lillard would become series regulars come Season 2.
Rios and Lillard, who appeared in 11 and 12 episodes, respectively, of the mystery set along the Texas-Mexican border, play a pair of dedicated journalists from the El Paso Times named Adriana Mendez and Daniel Frye. A revelation during the finale of the Season 1 suggested they might play a bigger role next year, and this news certainly confirms that assumption.
Renewed for a second series back in September, ‘The Bridge’ is based on a Scandinavian series titled ‘Bron,’ about a bridge between Denmark and Sweden. Here the titular connection spans Texas and the Mexican city of Chihuahua, as a serial killer works in both countries. Diane Kruger and Demian Bichir play the two-cross border detectives jointly working on this border-skirting murder mystery.
Season 1 finished on Oct. 2, with the second season slated for the summer of 2014.
While Lillard and Rios, best known for playing Jesse Pinkman’s girlfriend on ‘Breaking Bad,’ will find a bigger role, ‘The Bridge’ will also be losing a key member. Co-creator Meredith Stiehm will return to working on Season 4 of Showtime’s ‘Homeland,’ where she was a producer for the first two seasons. Stiehm developed ‘The Bridge’ alongside Elwood Reid, who will take over showrunning duties.
