In Hollywood's ongoing effort to try to make award shows interesting, EW.com is reporting that ABC has just signed up two stars from it's smash hit comedy Modern Family to host the 2012 edition of the Billboard Music Awards. Surprisingly enough, the stars aren't Sofia Vergara's own "golden globes" but are in fact Dunphy parents Julie Bowen & Ty Burrell. This isn't an altogether new precedent as last year Community star Ken Jeong hosted the show and received pretty positive marks overall.
The actors are of course no strangers to award shows, as the pair won Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress respectively at last year's Emmy telecast. Anyone who's seen their work on Modern Family, or better yet, seen them on a late night talk show, knows that both are incredibly capable entertainers with impeccable comic timing.
You'd think people with those qualifications would be hired to host every award show, but then you wouldn't be the people who picked Anne Hathaway and James Franco to host the Oscars a couple years back. While both are great actors, that show was an unmitigated disaster. But I digress... the 2012 Billboard Music Awards will air live on ABC on Sunday, May 20th from 8 to (hopefully) 11pm EST.
Do you think Claire & Phil are up to the task of bringing their brand of "Modern" humor across to the stuffy award show circuit? Or should they stick to their day jobs?
