WATCH: Chilling Full-Length Trailer for 'Doctor Who' Christmas Special Is Here!
'Doctor Who' fans have their first look at Matt Smith's farewell, as the BBC has released the first full-length trailer for this year's Christmas Special: "The Time of the Doctor."
This isn't just any old Christmas special, however. It's also the swan song of the 11th incarnation of The Doctor, played by Matt Smith. The BBC announced earlier this year that Smith would be leaving the show, after seeing the show through its big 50th anniversary special in November, and the annual Christmas special.
The trailer is only 30 seconds long, but there is a lot of action packed into that short time. All of the most memorable villains from Eleven's reign have returned: the Cybermen, the Daleks, the Weeping Angels, and the Silence. We haven't seen Matt Smith take on this many monsters since the Season 5 finale part one: "The Pandorica Opens."
In further bad news for The Doctor, it seems he will be returning to Trenzalore, which we already know is the location of The Doctor's grave. Not a good place for him to be, especially when it is apparently under siege. Plus, it looks like the Doctor has fallen right into a trap. However, if there's one thing we've learned about our Eleventh Doctor, it's that you do not want to put him in a trap.
It looks like The Doctor won't be able to escape the trap this time. We hear a Dalek utter the dreaded words, "The Doctor is regenerating," which is sure to send a chill down any Whovian's spine. Smith's predecessors, Chris Eccleston and David Tennant, both had heartbreaking regeneration scenes, and Smith's is sure to be no different.
Smith will be replaced by Peter Capaldi, who was announced as the 12th Doctor this past August, after much speculation.
