As if the anticipation weren’t high enough for the triumphant return of ‘Community,’ NBC released a smart and savvy full-length trailer that is completely in line with the attitude of the show, and only serves to raise excitement.
Even before this drop, a recent and very short teaser took us back to Greendale and the study room, and that itself followed several major announcements over the last year. The most significant, of course, was the return of showrunner Dan Harmon, who led the series for the first three years before getting canned, and seeing the quality of the show suffer as a result.
Season 5 also will see a diminished role by Donald Glover, and it also marks the introduction of Jonathan Banks, who will be a regular character taking over more or less the spot vacated by Chevy Chase.
All of that, alongside an exciting list of gueststars, makes the Jan. 2 premiere all the more noteworthy for the dedicated fans of the subtle and clever comedy.
So, here is what we learn from the trailer, which plays out as an epic feature film adventure, complete with gravitas-laden voice-over guy (couldn’t be any other way, right?).
-In typical ‘Community’ fashion, they address in the story that which is taking place off screen. The premiere is an episode titled ‘Repiloting,’ and Abed comments on how often characters leave slowly series later on, only appearing in some episodes, and Troy agrees.
-There is a riff on ‘The Hunger Games’ et al, and new clocked villain dubbed the ‘ass-crack bandit.’
-Walton Goggins who plays Boyd Crowder from ‘Justified’ shows up to administer a lie-detector test, and Chang is only momentarily comfortable in the notoriously empty seat next to Jeff.
-Jonathan Banks is introduced, sort of. He is seen briefly in the background, gets a chance to speak while wearing a mask, and then wields an axe.
-All the other students are back, including Leonard, Fat Neil, Magnitude, Garrett, and most notably Starburns, who is wearing a curious ensemble and championing Britta for some reason.
-It’s still just as foul and immature as before.
-The most rewarding part of the trailer, undoubtedly, is the return of the promise made early and often by Abed: Six Seasons and a Movie!
You can check out the trailer below. What are you most excited about?
Community returns to NBC for a one-hour premiere on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 8/7c.
"What are you most excited about?" I'm excited by the vague hope management will realize the folly of it's ways and stop forcing the talent to add idiotic questions at the end of EVERY article. Make 2014 the year stupid questions stopped and talent was allowed to shine!
