Teaser Trailer Drops for 'Penny Dreadful'

Horror fans, rejoice! And maybe say a prayer.

The teaser trailer for Showtime’s forthcoming dark literary drama has dropped, and it looks as devilishly frightening and atmospherically eerie as you could hope.

Set in 1890s Victorian London, the John Logan-created series tells the origin stories of some rather famous gothic figures and monsters, including Dorian Gray and Frankenstein, weaving them into a tale that is sexy, supernatural, scary, and especially dark.

We don’t learn much from the trailer, but it certainly sets a very morbid and chilling tone, as a disheveled and terrified woman kneels and prayers before a cross, only to eventually look up and see the cross has turned upside down. "We all have our demons," it declares.

Also led by ‘Skyfall’ director Sam Mendes, ‘Penny Dreadful’ stars Josh Harnett and Eva Green (that’s where the aforementioned sexy comes in), along with Sir Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, and Billie Piper. Harnett portrays charming American Ethan Chandler, Green (seen in the trailer) is described as seductive and formidable (not at all a stretch and something she excels at if you’re familiar with her body of work), and Dalton is an African explorer, Sir Malcolm.

The first pair of episodes will be directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, who very much knows how to craft a scary story, having helmed ‘The Orphanage.’

In production now in Dublin, the series is slated to air in the spring of 2014.

The term ‘Penny Dreadful’ refers to lurid, supernatural fictional publications released in the 19th century that inspired authors and captivated audiences. You can check out the teaser below.

The issue I have is few shows capture the vernacular of the times. Deadwood and Ripper street stand out and were a sheer pleasure to listen too. As was Spartacus. When words are specific they carry much more depth and elevate the viewing experience.
