'Community' Celebrates Christmas with Animated Short
Lest a holiday season passes by without some festivities from the gang on ‘Community,’ NBC has released a short animated webisode ahead of Christmas and the series’ Jan. 2 Season 5 premiere.
The clip, titled ‘Miracle on Jeff’s Street,’ finds a lonely Winger at home during the holidays when Dean Craig Pelton (Santa Craig?) and Ben Chang (Changdeer?) show up to spread some Christmas cheer.
Out of Dean’s sack of presents pops Abed, Troy, Britta, Annie, and Shirley, and all rejoice.
Of course, in standard ‘Community’ fashion, Dan Harmon and company don’t let a moment go by without reflecting on the state of affairs surrounding the show or commenting on storytelling conventions. After the five study group members pop out of the bag, the Dean bemoans the fact that there should be one more appearing too; that would be the less-than-dearly departed Chevy Chase.
What’s more, when Troy goes to speak, he spews presents, and the Dean shrieks, "what is happening to Troy!?" referring to the extended absence of Donald Glover, who will only appear in some of the episodes on Season 5.
Lastly, Annie makes sure to let you know that the show returns for an hour just after the New Year, and that that NBC will also be sporting the Olympics.
It may not be a full-length episode, but it’s definitely something warm and fuzzy to hold over fans for a few more weeks. The animation is welcome, and on any other show might feel like a lazy copout. In the past, ‘Community’ has had a ‘Glee’ Christmas episode, and another where Abed envisioned everyone as stop-motion versions of themselves as he searches for the meaning of season. We’ve also seen the characters as 8-bit video game versions of themselves, as well as puppets.
