Recap: The 2014 People's Choice Awards

Awards season kicked off Wednesday night with the People’s Choice Awards. It’s the award show that prides itself on being “by the people, for the people,” but they’re liars because everyone knows celebrities aren’t really people.

Anyway. Instead of old-fashioned academies favoring a plutocratic system (where votes may or may not be bought), the People’s Choice Awards rely on regular joes voting online for their favorite actors and musicians over and over and over again. (You can see why this show is so popular with youth – they have the patience and time for that kind of hardcore dedication.)

The awards are pretty much a pat on the back for celebrities. A fist bump, if you will, which lets them know that they’re still “cool” and viable. For now. People, as we all know, are finicky creatures.

The ceremony was hosted by Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs from CBS’ ‘2 Broke Girls,’ basically recycling their schtick from the show: Dennings is sarcastic and bored, while Behrs plays a dumb blonde. Ho hum. At one point, Dennings referred to themselves as “Hathaway and Franco” – a nod to the ill-fated Oscar hosting attempt by Anne Hathaway and James Franco back in 2011 – and, well, let’s just say Dennings and Behrs made me wish the real Hathaway and Franco were actually hosting. Yeah, it was that bad.

The awards portion wasn’t that much better. Some people sang. Jennifer Hudson won a Humanitarian award, which was cool (and she looked classy as all get-out). But, the rest of the show was predictable. The thing about the People’s Choice Awards is they basically give an award to whoever bothers to show up. These A-listers are not going to miss their yoga class or tear themselves away from their adopted kids if they’re not guaranteed to walk away with one of those crystal blob things.

The show wasn’t a total snooze fest, though. Here are the highlights:

Cutest Moment: When Sean Hayes referred to Sandra Bullock as his “wife” when handing her all of her Favoritie Movie Actress awards (three!) and Bullock commenting how she spent her "lonely" Friday nights voting for herself.

Biggest Sigh of Relief Moment: Justin Timberlake thanking his wife, Jessica Biel, for being patient and teaching him how to load a dishwasher, thereby confirming they’re still married, everything’s all good, or at least, he’s still doing her dishes.

Funniest Moment: Ellen DeGeneres, after winning her record-breaking 14th People’s Choice award, thanking her fans and quipping: “I was just talking to this lovely African American the woman the other day… single…works 80 hours a week to get by and she looks forward to coming home every single night and watching me. And that woman’s name is Oprah Winfrey.”

Saddest Moment: *Tie

-When LL Cool J appeared onstage with a shirt on.

-Discovering Adam Sandler won his fourth consecutive Funniest Movie Actor Award and realizing we, the people, are to blame for him still making movies.

Most Awkward Moment: *Tie

-Shemar Moore (‘Criminal Minds’) relentlessly hitting on Malin Akerman (‘Trophy Wife’). And then Akerman pronouncing Ian Somerhalder, “Somerhandler.” It still works.

-And then when real-life exes Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder accepted their award for Favorite On-screen Chemistry for ‘The Vampire Diaries’ together onstage. They were cute, even if they were living out every former couples’ worst nightmare.

Coolest Moment: Sarah Michelle Gellar’s shout out to her ‘Buffy’ fans after collecting her very first People’s Choice Award for her work on ‘The Crazy Ones.’ (Question: should Gellar even be in the same room as Somerhalder?)

There were a ton of winners, so if you simply must know who won Favorite TV Bromance, please read on. Winners announced in bold with an asterisk.

Don't you think it's sad that all the favourite movie candidates are sequels? There must have been a lot of CW voters - Beauty & the Beast! Genuine congrats to The Good Wife - excellent show
