Marvel is about to get a hearty helping of big love this year. TV Guide has exclusively learned that actor Bill Paxton will be joining the cast of ABC's popular freshman series 'Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' for a special guest arc of at least four episodes beginning sometime in late February or early March.
As for the role itself, the former 'Big Love' star will play Agent John Garrett, who will work alongside agents Ward (Brett Dalton) and May (Ming-Na Wen) in what's sure to turn into a pretty kickass team. “He is the type who wants to stay out in the field no matter how high-level he gets,” executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen told the site.
“We wanted to bring in a rough-and-tumble former cohort of Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) with a little bit of attitude and cigar-smoking swagger,” added executive producer Jed Whedon.
Comic book enthusiasts may recall some of Garrett’s backstory, which gets mentioned in the comic 'Elektra: Assassin' — S.H.I.E.L.D. turned Garrett into a cyborg in order to save his life after being injured in the line of duty. However, all that Whedon will say on the matter is ”when Garrett got his promotion to Level 7, he refused to sit behind a desk and doesn’t like the formalities of S.H.I.E.L.D. He’s going to help Coulson solve some mysteries and is not afraid to rig an explosive or two.”
Sounds exciting! And in a series so heavily focused on the core S.H.I.E.L.D. team, it'll be nice to see a new face added to its ranks, even if it's just for a little while.
'Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on ABC.
