Today, a lot of TV news was announced at The CW’s Television Critics Association winter press tour. Not only will fans see a new miniseries, but also an upcoming spin-off and, unfortunately, no superheroine series on the small screen.
Let’s start with the miniseries ‘Labyrinth,’ starring Sebastian Stan (‘Once Upon a Time’) and Jessica Brown-Findlay (‘Downton Abbey’). The four-hour event miniseries, filmed on-location in the medieval town of Carcassonne in southwest France and Cape Town, South Africa, is adapted from Kate Mosse’s bestselling novel of the same name.
‘Labyrinth’ will bounce between modern medieval France, while following two women separated by centuries who are both on a journey to find the Holy Grail. The series also stars John Hurt and Tom Felton. A premiere date has yet to be announced.
In addition to the above medieval goodness, The CW is also launching a ‘Veronica Mars’ spin-off digital series. Network president Mark Pedowitz revealed that ‘Veronica Mars’ fans will see a related series created for The CW’s digital side aka CW Seed.
“The ‘Veronica Mars’ movie got it going,” Pedowitz said. “Rob Thomas is very excited about doing this at CW Seed.” The web series (reportedly, around eight 10-minute episodes will be produced) is set to launch after the ‘Veronica Mars’ movie hits theaters on March 14. No concept or characters have been set.
Finally, we have the anticipated ‘Wonder Woman’ prequel ‘Amazon.’ It was also announced that the series is no more -- for now. The series was set to tell the origin story of Wonder Woman’s alter-ego Diana of Themyscira, but as Pedowitz told The Hollywood Reporter, "We did not go forward with it.”
However, he did reveal he’s open to trying again, when it comes to the Wonder Woman character, but only if the right material is available. "It all depends on the script. We were very careful with ‘Arrow’ and we're being very careful with ‘Flash,’" Pedowitz said. "These are iconic characters so we're going to be very careful with ‘Wonder Woman.’ You only get one shot before you get bit."
Stay tuned for even more CW news coming in a bit!
