New 'Penny Dreadful' Teaser Trailer Released

New 'Penny Dreadful' Teaser Trailer Released

A month after Showtime dropped the most teasing of teases, their dark and atmospheric supernatural offering ‘Penny Dreadful’ has been given a longer though still scintillating look.

The network, which also set a May premiere date, showed the trailer at their portion of the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, and it has since been posted online.

The series, whose title refers to lurid and eerie publications released during the 19th century in Britain that would later inspire some famed authors, is set in 1890s Victorian London where infamous gothic characters and monsters reside. Dorian Gray and Frankenstein are among those who look to make an appearance.

Eva Green stars as Vanessa Ives, Josh Hartnett is Ethan Chandler, and Timothy Dalton, Rory Kinnear, Helen McCrory, and Billie Piper also feature. Created by John Logan, ‘Penny Dreadful’ is executive produced by Sam Mendes (‘Skyfall’), and described by Logan as "highly erotic," "very bloody," and "disturbing."

The trailer below expands on mere hints given in December, as we find Ms. Ives discussing a "place in the shadows" where evil resides and cursed men are trapped. As she tells of this netherworld, some compelling scenes flash across the screen.

We see rabid wolves, vampiric women, (presumably) ominous mirrors and statues, some torturous weapons, and lots of skin. There is also a man who is either in the most uncomfortable yoga position imagined, or possessed by something otherworldly. Upon hearing all this, though not yet seeing it all it seems, Hartnett's Chandler is rather gung-ho.

Check out the trailer below and see for yourself.

‘Penny Dreadful’ premieres on Showtime on Sunday May 11 at 10/9c.
