NBC Planning ‘Parenthood,’ ‘About a Boy’ Crossover Episodes

‘Parenthood’s Crosby (Dax Shepard) has found a new BFF in ‘About a Boy’s Will (David Walton)! Do I smell bromance? It looks like these two characters and their shows, both executive produced by Jason Katims, will be crossing over into one another’s fictional worlds.

NBC Planning ‘Parenthood,’ ‘About a Boy’ Crossover EpisodesOn Sunday, Katims revealed the crossover news during NBC’s Television Critics Association winter press panel. For those unaware, in last Thursday’s ‘Parenthood,’ Walton made an appearance as Will at Crosby and Adam’s (Peter Krause) poker game.

"I think just because both shows are set in the San Francisco and Bay Area, it sort of made sense, and because Will is in the world of music and Crosby is in world of music," Katims said. "It turns out that in ‘About a Boy,’ Will also has his own poker game so Dax Shepard will be making appearances as Crosby Braverman on ‘About a Boy.’"

In addition to poker, Will and Crosby have a lot in common, including their love of music. After all, Crosby and Adam own the Luncheonette, a recording studio. It only makes sense to have these two come in contact on more than one occasion.

‘About a Boy,’ which also stars Minnie Driver (Fiona) and Benjamin Stockham (Marcus), is based on Nick Hornby’s novel and adapted from the hit movie, starring Hugh Grant. However, (potential spoilers ahead), the very first episode moves through the entire plot of the book. That’s right, the first episode ends with Will and Marcus at the school talent show.

As Katims explained (and joked about) the above decision, “I just thought we were going to do the pilot. I felt like in adapting it, what we wanted to do was take this [scene], that was so beautiful in the book and in the movie and something I felt like a story I really loved, and honor that. [It] then gives us the room to move forward with telling new stories and making it our own."

‘Parenthood’ airs Thursdays at 10/9c, while ‘About a Boy’ premieres Saturday, Feb. 22 at 11/10c after the Olympics. The new half-hour comedy will then move to its regular timeslot on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 9/8c on NBC. Below, you can check out a sneak peak of ‘About a Boy.’
