FOX Puts Ben Affleck Directed Pilot 'The Middle Man' on Hold

Back in September, we brought you the news that Ben Affleck would be directing a 1960s set crime drama pilot for FOX, entitled 'The Middle Man.' Unfortunately, the project is now being placed on an indefinite hold, due to issues involving the Oscar-winning actor/director's ever expanding schedule.

As everyone reading this is no doubt aware, Affleck was cast as Batman in Zack Snyder's upcoming sequel to 'Man of Steel' last year, an announcement which dominated Internet conversation for weeks. While the film's release date has since been postponed to 2016, actual production is proceeding as scheduled, leaving Ben unavailable to helm 'The Middle Man.' Between that high profile undertaking and his other spring film commitments, there was just no way the timing would work out.

This leaves FOX at a crossroads. The network has no desire to abandon the project, as several scripts have already been written, and 'Medium' creator Glenn Gordon Caron is still on board as showrunner. This gives FOX two options, the first being to simply find a new director, give them a month or so to get up to speed, and then commence filming. The second option is to wait for production on 'Batman Vs. Superman' to end this summer, allowing Affleck to return to the director's chair. Either way, Affleck will remain an executive producer on the series.

For those unfamiliar, 'The Middle Man' is set in Affleck's native Boston, and tells the story of FBI Agent Rudy MacAteer. Rudy is assigned to bring down the powerful Italian mafia in the city, but his often morally questionably actions inadvertently lead to the rise of the Irish mob. Stay tuned to TVRage for any further updates on the show's fate.
