The last few days have been absolutely bursting with pilot orders, and ABC has made sure that today will be no different.
First up on the docket is 'Fresh Off the Boat,' a single-camera comedy pilot from 'Don't Trust the B---- in Apt. 23' creator Nahnatchka Khan. The order comes complete with a "put pilot' commitment, which in TV industry lingo means that ABC has agreed to air the finished pilot at some point, regardless of whether they grant the show a full series pick-up.
'Fresh Off the Boat's premise is based on the memoirs of Asian American restaurateur Eddie Huang, owner and operator of the New York City eatery Baohaus. The lead character (also named Eddie) is the hip-hop loving son of Chinese immigrants, and his struggles to make it as a first generation American. Eddie's parents are a study in contrasts. Eddie's father owns an American style chain of steakhouses, and is obsessed with western culture, while Eddie's mother often finds herself both confused and put off by American societal norms. The biggest difference from Eddie's real life is that he and his family are actually Taiwanese.
ABC's second comedy order of the day goes to multi-camera project 'Saint Francis,' created by Chris Moynihan. Moynihan previously created and starred in the short-lived sitcom 'Man Up!' for the network. 'Saint Francis' follows a conservative, blue-collar cop who finds his old-school beliefs clashing with the reality that his 29-year-old daughter has gotten pregnant out of wedlock. Despite his on-screen role in 'Man Up!,' Moynihan will remain strictly behind the camera on this venture. Unlike 'Boat,' 'Francis' pilot was not given a guaranteed commitment.
Both series join a currently untitled multi-camera pilot starring red hot 'Ride Along' star Kevin Hart on ABC's upcoming comedy slate.
