With only three episodes left of “Smash,” the approach of the season’s climax can be felt stronger than ever before.
Last week, we saw our show’s heroine, Karen, played by Katherine McPhee, get completely burned by fellow Marilyn wannabe Ivy (Megan Hilty)as she was sent a phony text message telling her she could leave practice. As a result, a frustrated Derek (Jack Davenport) gave Karen’s song to Ivy whose rendition brought several to tears. Resident celebrity Rebecca Duval, played by guest star Uma Thurman, was not moved, however, but moreover threatened and suggested that she sing the “Secondhand White Baby Grand” number.
On this week’s episode entitled “Tech,” the cast is preparing to hit the stage with the production and it seems it won’t be a smooth ride. Derek, once completely infuriated on a regular basis with Rebecca finds himself growing closer than ever, leaving Ivy wondering where their relationship stands. Karen is finally forced to choose between her boyfriend, Dev and the show when he proposes to her in what appears to be the least romantic proposal of all time.
Last week it seemed that Debra Messing’s character, Julia, had finally started to get it together and reunite her shattered family. All that comes crashing down, however, when Eileen (Anjelica Houston) announces that former Joe Dimaggio actor and part time home wrecker, Michael Swift (Will Chase) will be returning to reprise his role. Julia will deliver an ultimatum to Eileen leaving us to wonder whether or not she will be involved with “Bombshell” any longer.
Amongst all the drama and music is the pot stirrer himself, Ellis (Jaime Cepero) who, I’m just going to say it, needs to finally get what he deserves. At this point, there are few left for him to double cross, however, I’m sure he will find a way to cause even more trouble. Note to the “Smash” writers: If nothing else goes the right way in the remaining three episodes, please at least let us see Ellis get his just desserts.
Smash airs Mondays at 10/9c on NBC.
