For fans of Syfy original drama 'Haven,' the last couple of months have been filled with trepidation.
For the first time ever, the long-running series had ended its current season without a next season renewal in place. 'Haven's cast and crew urged viewers to bombard Syfy with tweets and emails asking for the show to continue, including the hashtag campaigns "#renewhaven" and "#discoverhaven." While we'll obviously never know just how much those movements influenced Syfy's decision making, it doesn't really matter anymore. 'Haven' will indeed be getting a Season 5.
The news was first broken earlier this afternoon on Twitter by series star Emily Rose. Her tweet read as follows: "HUGE NEWS! We got a 26 ep. pickup! 13 new HAVEN eps-fall & icing on the cake 13 more eps in 2015."
No 'Haven' fans, your eyes aren't deceiving you. Not only has the series been renewed for its usual round of 13 episodes, an additional 13 installments have also been ordered. That essentially amounts to a two season pick-up for a show that many fans had pegged as a goner.
As an Internet writer, it's always a good day when I get to report news that makes me happy on a personal level, and this is most assuredly one of those days. 'Haven's fourth season was arguably its greatest yet, with many new layers being added to the backstories of not only Audrey Parker but of the town itself. Just when it appeared that the stakes couldn't possibly get any higher, the writing staff always managed to throw out another curveball that made me question all that I thought I knew about where the story was headed. Thank goodness for cable, where complex, offbeat sci-fi series like this get a chance to grow and flourish without the constant threat of ratings related cancellation.
The first half of Haven's super-sized fifth season (for some reason Syfy is billing these 26 episodes as one long season) premieres this fall. The second half will air next fall. If you'd like to catch up on the series so far, Seasons 1-3 are currently on Netflix Instant.
