The Fonz meets 'Everybody Loves Raymond'? Well, sort of. ABC has ordered the multi-camera sitcom, 'The Winklers,' to pilot, which is penned by Phil Rosenthal, creator of the family hit comedy 'Everybody Loves Raymond,' and based on Henry Winkler's relationship with his son-in-law.
It seems the comedy is a real family affair with Winkler's real-life son-in-law, Rob Reinis, serving as executive producer, alongside Winkler's son, Max Winkler. 'New Girl' star, Jake Johnson, is the younger Winkler's producing partner, so he's also been thrown into the mix as an executive producer of the half-hour show. Rosenthal, besides writing, will executive produce.
'The Winklers' is based on the Winklers' lives, centering on the son-in-law, an emotionally reserved construction worker living with his in-laws, who learns about love and touchy-feely stuff and the fuzzie wuzzies from them. It's pretty certain that the senior Winkler will star as himself, but no deal has been struck.
ABC does seem like it's going into the funny business in a big way. 'The Winklers' joins nine other comedy pilots recently picked up by the network.
