One of the most anticipated shows of the summer this year, ‘Extant,’ continues to add notable names to its growing cast.
Grace Gummer will enlist in the Steven Spielberg-produced, Halle Berry-starring sci-fi thriller on CBS, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The series follows Berry’s astronaut Molly Watts' return from space looking to reconnect with her family amid mysterious happenings.
Gummer will play Julie, a scientific partner of Watt’s husband John, as the two are in some way involved with robotics, having created prototypes, one of which includes Molly and John’s son.
The actress is the latest addition that includes Goran Visnjic of ‘ER’ fame, who plays John, as well as Camryn Manheim in the role of Molly’s best friend. Michael O’Neill is the director of a privatized space program, while young Pierce Gagnon is the son of John and Molly.
This news comes at a rather good time for Gummer as it would seem, given that the forthcoming third season of 'The Newsroom' will be its last. (Gummer landed a recurring role on the HBO show during Season 2.)
In addition to being known as a daughter of Meryl Streep, Gummer’s credits include ‘American Horror Story,’ ‘Smash,’ and ‘Frances Ha.’
‘Extant’ is set to premiere on CBS July 2 at 9/8c. The story still remains vague and esoteric, but if you want a tease, check out the 26-second trailer below.
