Ted Mosby, move over! Greta Gerwig has been cast to topline the CBS 'How I Met Your Mother' spin-off, 'How I Met Your Dad.'
The new series will be a completely different cast from the 'How I Met Your Mother' crew, however, the premise itself will be quite similar. Gerwig is slated to play Sally; a woman who will slowly reveal how she met her husband via a series of flashbacks. (Sound familiar?)
Producers describe Sally as “a female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she’s going in life. She has just figured out that she has nothing in common with her husband of less than a year. A break-up is inevitable, but Sally will find a solid circle of support in her friends and family, who are often too willing to give ‘good’ advice that can backfire badly. Meanwhile, Sally must filter out the input and decide what’s best for her.”
‘How I Met Your Dad’ marks a substantial career shift for Gerwig since her main work has involved mostly indie films. She was first noticed in the 2010 feature ‘Greenberg,’ and has since earned a Golden Globe nomination for the feature ‘Frances Ha’ — a film she also co-wrote. She recently wrapped ‘The Humbling’ opposite Al Pacino and is also slated to star opposite Julianne Moore in Rebecca Miller’s ‘Maggie’s Plan.’ Her most recent television work has been voicing a character on Adult Swim's 'China, IL.'
Reportedly, after the pilot is filmed in Los Angeles, the studio is willing to move the filming to New York City just for Gerwig. Subsequently, she is set to produce ‘HIMYD’ with writer-executive producers Emily Spivey, Carter Bays, and Craig Thomas. It is anticipated that she will also write. 'HIMYM’s Pam Fryman will be directing.
