Funnyman Oscar Nuñez is getting ready to make a name for himself on USA’s new comedy series ‘Benched,’ Deadline exclusively reports.
The single-camera comedy, which was recently granted a 12-episode order by the network, revolves around ‘Happy Endings’ Eliza Coupe in the leading role of Nina. A career-driven corporate lawyer, Nina gets overlooked for an expected promotion resulting in a public nervous breakdown. This leads Nina to begin working as a public defender.
Enter Nuñez, who will play a public defender and co-worker of Nina’s. Jay Harrington (‘Hot in Cleveland,’ ‘Better Off Ted’) is also set to star as Phil, “a tall, dark and handsome, if not a little scruffy, public defender and avid gambler.”
This marks the first regular TV role for Nuñez, since his days at Dunder Mifflin in Scranton. For nine years, ‘The Office’ fans watched Nuñez portray gay accountant Oscar Martinez and work side by side with fellow accountants Kevin Malone (Brian Baumgartner) and Angela Martin (Angela Kinsey). He even shared some awkward and frustrating moments with Michael Scott (Steve Carell), among others at the paper company.
As much as I miss ‘The Office,’ and Nuñez on the hit NBC comedy, I look forward to him strutting his stuff in a new occupation and a legal environment.
No official date has been announced for the ‘Benched’ premiere, but we’ll let you know when the jury is in on the Season 1 debut.
