Jonas Brothers fans feeling depressed after the group's recent breakup can take comfort in knowing that they'll be able to see a lot more of the youngest Jonas come next fall.
Nick Jonas has signed on to his first major series role in DirecTV's original series, 'Navy St.' The gritty family drama is set against the backdrop of Navy Street — a Venice, California-based mixed martial arts (MMA) gym owned by Alvey Anderson (Frank Grillo), a former fighter who never made it big due to a drug addiction, but is now sober.
Jonas will play Nate Henderson, Alvey's shy youngest son and the prized fighter at the gym. He will join Jonathan Tucker ('Parenthood'), who was recently cast as Alvey's eldest son, a once promising fighter who is now nothing more than a junkie. 'The Glades' star Kiele Sanchez also joins the cast as Lisa Prince, Alvey's long-time girlfriend.
Though this will be Jonas' first major series role, it will not be his first try at acting. He played a version of himself in the Disney Channel original series 'JONAS' as well as 'Jonas L.A.' and had a brief arc on NBC's 'Smash.' Most recently, he guest-starred on 'Hawaii Five-0.' Additionally, Jonas has appeared on both Broadway and the West End, in productions such as 'Les Miserables,' 'Hairspray,' and 'How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.' He will make his feature film debut in the upcoming thriller 'Careful What You Wish For.'
It looks like Jonas is trying to follow in fellow Disney vet Justin Timberlake's footsteps, breaking out of his pop star image and becoming a genuine actor. 'Navy St.' is certainly a departure from 'JONAS,' so we'll see if the youngest JoBro is up to the challenge.
'Navy St.' begins filming in Los Angeles in May, for a fall premiere.
