Debra Messing is returning to TV - -and also to NBC -- now that she's joined the Peacock network's new hour-long project 'The Mysteries of Laura.'
The 'Smash' alum wil play the titular character, Laura Diamond. Based on the Spanish series 'Los Misterios De Laura,' the series follows the life and relationships of female homicide detective (Messing), who apparently has no trouble locking up murderous criminals, but when it comes to dealing with her troublesome twin children, she's sort of, well, a mess (no pun intended).
The drama comes from mega-producer Greg Berlanti ('Arrow,' 'Everwood') and his frequent collaborator, Jeff Rake, and will be directed by McG ('Chuck,' 'The O.C.'). The pilot will be shot in New York per Messing's request. Messing, a New York native, is not only based in the Big Apple, but she's currently making her Broadway debut (and earning critical acclaim) in John Patrick Shanley’s play 'Outside Mullingar.' Messing will begin shooting 'Laura' after her stage run ends.
'The Mysteries of Laura' extends Messing's long relationship with NBC. In addition to her role on the now-defunct musical series, 'Smash,' Messing, of course, rose to fame playing the role of Grace Adler in the Emmy-winning sitcom, 'Will & Grace.' Messing won an Emmy in 2003 for the part. She also earned rave reviews for her work in the short-lived USA series 'The Starter Wife' back in 2007.
