Last week we said goodbye to resident country girl, Skylar Laine. After her descent in the bottom three the week before, she just couldn’t pull off enough votes with her British pop and 60’s song to stick around. This week, the theme is “California Dreamin” and “songs we wished we wrote,” which might bring about some interesting song choices by the idol contestants.
The “California Dreamin” theme certainly brings to mind an array of older songs including the theme’s namesake by the Mamas and the Papas. This season, the contestants seem to have taken a liking to more vintage tunes, so it is likely that we will hear some classic favorites from artists such as the Beach Boys and the Eagles (Hotel California, anyone?). That’s not to say there haven’t been plenty of California references throughout the last decade for the final four to choose from. The contestants, if they would like to pull in that younger crowd, could certainly go contemporary and choose one of the more recent California themed hits. Personally, I’m holding out for someone to sing Michael Buble’s “Hollywood.”
For the second theme of the night, the final four have the wide open choice of picking a song that they wish they would have written themselves. This leaves a lot of wiggle room for the contestants to really just pick any song that they can perform well and that will pull in the votes. With such a personal theme, it should be an indicator of what type of artists these idol hopefuls aspire to become.
It’s down to the wire for the final four contestants, who need to make every song count. With such a surprising elimination last week, it’s clear that no one is safe on the American Idol stage. Tonight could prove to be anyone’s game and only time will tell who will live to see another Idol week.
The final four perform tonight at 8/7c on Fox.
