It looks like 'Grey's Anatomy' fans have a Shepherd family reunion to look forward to later this season. TVGuide exclusively reports that Caterina Scorsone has signed on with the medical drama to reprise her former 'Private Practice' role as Amelia Shepherd — aka McDreamy's sister.
Details on what exactly brings Scorsone's character back to Grey Sloan Memorial are being kept tightly under wraps, however, we DO know she'll be re-emerging in an episode slated to air at the beginning of May and will recur throughout the rest of Season 10.
One can't help but speculate if Amelia's arrival has anything to do with Cristina's (Sandra Oh) impending departure at the end of the season. After Yang's position at the hospital is left vacant, perhaps Derek's sister will want to slide into the job. For all we know, we could be looking at Meredith's new person. (You know, in a sister-in-law type way.)
Granted, this is all just guessing on our parts, but you never know. If the medical license fits...
Scorsone joined 'Private Practice's third season as Derek's younger neurosurgeon sister, who previously struggled with drug and alcohol problems after the death of their father. She later made her first appearance on 'Grey's during the show's seventh season.
After 'Private Practice' came to an end in 2013, Scorsone has outwardly expressed her interest in joining the 'Grey's team in some capacity. "That would be wonderful," she told the site. "They have been so good to me here in Shondaland, if they ever wanted me to come and do a guest spot or anything — cook a soufflé — I would do anything."
It seems that wish has finally come true.
