As they continue to push for quality new and original content into to rival Netflix, Amazon has nabbed a notable leading actress to topline one of their forthcoming dramas.
Mena Suvari, best known for her work in the very different ‘American Pie’ and ‘American Beauty,’ will topline the Amazon Studios drama pilot ‘Hysteria.’
Suvari will portray Dr. Logan Harlow, a brilliant, determined, winning, and yet socially awkward neurologist and psychologist from the University of Texas. She travels to her hometown of Austin to investigate a mysterious epidemic among high school girls that seems to be spreading through technology (read: it probably is).
Not to be confused with the recent Maggie Gyllenhaal film of the same name, the hysteria here isn’t joyous; it has to do with fear and panic. The brief description of the character and show seem to set up perfectly for some unrequited hometown romances with what sounds like a professionally-obsessed character that hasn’t much going on in her personal life – maybe the high school girls can help her out!
Well, that’s speculation, but for Suvari, it means a potential regular role for someone who has been guesting on shows for some time now. She made an appearance on ‘American Horror Story’ and just completed an arc on ‘Chicago Fire.’
‘Hysteria’ comes from Shaun Cassidy, most noted for leading the short-lived TV show ‘Invasion’ in 2005.
Earlier this month, Amazon sent four of their five drama pilots to series, including Chris Carter's 'The After.'
