Prepare yourselves, 'Grey's Anatomy' fans, because it looks like two prominent members of Grey Sloan Memorial will be hanging up their scrubs, possibly for good, by the end of this season.
Deadline exclusively reports that series regulars Tessa Ferrer (who plays Dr. Leah Murphy) and Gaius Charles (who plays Dr. Shane Ross) will not be getting their contracts picked up for the medical drama's 11th season. Reasons behind the decision remain unclear — such as if the departure was actually their call or the writers. In fact, it's unknown if the actors will even return for any guest appearances in the future.
So what could this suggest about the fate of their characters? That's up to fans to speculate, though given 'Grey's longstanding track record for heartache and tears, we're guessing everyone should have a box of tissues handy come finale time. You know, just in case.
Ferrer and Charles first joined the ABC hit as recurring characters during Season 9, along with Tina Majorino (who was killed off in this season’s opener), Camilla Luddington, and Jerikka Hinton as medical interns. The remaining four were all promoted to full-on cast members last summer.
But they aren't the only ones handing over their scalpel. This also marks the final season for original cast member Sandra Oh, who announced her upcoming departure from the series last August. And at the rate these docs seem to be dropping out, you can't help but wonder — how much longer can/should the series continue?
'Grey's Anatomy' airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
