Syfy’s scripted slate of original programming continues to grow and find success, as today the network announced that the freshman series ‘Helix’ will return for a second season.
While the series bowed on Jan. 10 to 1.8 million viewers, it added another million in the next three days through DVR, breaking network records for total viewers and the adult 18-49 demo.
From Ron Moore (‘Battlestar Galactica’) and Steven Maeda (‘Lost’), ‘Helix’ follows pathologist Dr. Alan Farragut (Billy Campbell) and his estranged ex-wife, Dr. Julia Walker (Kyra Zagorsky), on a mission to the Arctic to investigate a mysterious outbreak.
Season 2 will air in early 2015.
Elsewhere, Syfy has bumped up a much-anticipated summer sequel, as ‘Sharknado 2: The Second One’ has been forecasted a day sooner. The Ian Ziering and Tara Reid self-explanatory B-movie spectacular will now touch down on Wednesday, July 30 at 9/8c.
The sequel (sharkquel?) moves the action from Los Angeles to New York City, and Syfy released a new poster making very clear that the city will be leveled. Thankfully Ziering and Reid will be there to save the day, though the fates and roles of a supporting cast that includes Vivica A Fox, Mark McGrath, and Judah Friedlander, among others, is less than certain.
The news today comes a day after Syfy set summer premiere dates for ‘Defiance’ and new series ‘Dominion.’
