After Monday night, the epic tale of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ will finally reach its conclusion as our beloved Ted Mosby locks eyes with the mother of his children for the very first time. From slap bets and fun-filled nights at MacLaren’s, this series has taken the concept of a fairytale love story and turned it into 9 seasons of something quite legen — WAIT FOR IT — dary. (You know I had to do it.)
But even as the CBS sitcom prepares to take its final bow, there are still a few burning questions we hope they get around to answering. Such as…
1. What is The Mother’s name?
This woman (or at least the idea of her) has been the main focal point of the entire series. It would be nice to finally know her name, instead of having to refer to her as “The Mother” all the time. (Seriously, it’s starting to hurt my own mother’s feelings.) Let’s just hope, whatever the name is, that it goes well with “Mosby.”
2. Where has The Mother been during Ted’s story to their kids?
There’s been a lot of speculation regarding The Mother’s fate. Some think she’s dead, which explains why Ted is reminiscing about their love story to their children. Others think that somehow Ted is the one meeting his demise (though that seems a bit of a stretch unless the kids are performing a séance we don't know about). But regardless of how this particular plot point turns out, I hope it at least offers some explanation as to why this woman has allowed her children to be told a nine-year-long story without ever so much as popping in to say hello — or, you know, get Ted to stop talking.
3. How the hell did that pineapple end up on Ted’s nightstand?
Listen, writers — we’ve waited long enough to learn the mystery behind this prickly piece of fruit and now it’s time to pay the piper. Ted was able to piece together everything that happened to him during that crazy night back in Season 1 (“The Pineapple Incident”), except for learning where that darn pineapple actually came from. It’s been such a long-running gag on the show, it’d be a huge upset to the fans if nothing ever came of it. Not to mention, the Mosby Boys would lose all of their detective street cred if this went unsolved.
4. Where do Ted and The Mother get married?
The entire series is based on their love story and yet we’ve seen so little of them actually together. So it’d be nice to learn a little bit about their wedding day. Maybe the writers will even treat us to a flashback of the big day. Please? I think we’ve earned it.
5. What will happen to Lily and Marshall’s apartment?
Now that they’re officially moving to Italy, one can’t help but wonder what will become of their old stomping grounds. Ted has his own place, as do Barney and Robin. Could this mean the apartment will be given to a complete stranger? (Gasp!) This would actually be a great way to introduce the new members of the spin-off, 'How I Met Your Dad.' Perhaps one of them will take up residence there. Either way, I really hope we find out the apartment's fate, one way or another.
6. Do Robin and Barney stay together?
Another big speculation about the series revolves around the relationship between Ted and Robin. Even though she just got married to Barney, many dedicated shippers still believe Ted and Robin will end up together, with some even predicting that both The Mother and Barney are dead (thus explaining why he never appears in any of Lily’s imagined flash-forward moments on the porch). Add this to the fact that Robin wasn’t wearing a ring in the episode “Bad Crazy” during a scene set 12 years into the future (see above) and it isn't hard to assume that her marriage to Barney may not last. These are things we need to know, people!
7. Why does Ted sound like Bob Saget when he gets older?
Honestly, why did the writers decide to do this? Is this all part of some big plot twist we have yet to know about or was Saget just really desperate for some extra vocal work? Regardless, some sort of explanation seems in order, right? Otherwise, this just seems totally pointless.
And just in case you're in the mood for a little extra 'HIMYM' trivia, there's a certain TV Junkie feature you should probably take a look at.
‘How I Met Your Mother’s series finale airs Monday, March 31 at 8/7c on CBS.
