It looks like ‘The Astronaut Wives Club’ is blasting off into another premiere spot. Deadline exclusively reports the ABC drama, originally slated for this summer, is now looking at a 2014-2015 midseason debut.
Right now, the network has halted production to expand on the 10-episode limited series’ concept written by ‘Gossip Girl’s Stephanie Savage.
Based on Lily Koppel’s novel of the same name, it revolves around the Mercury Seven’s wives, who were in the spotlight while their husbands were busy making a name for themselves during the 1960s space race. Originally, the show looked to showcase these seven women, but now it will also chronicle the lives of the Gemini and Apollo mission crews’ spouses. The seven wives of the Mercury astronauts will remain central characters, but they will eventually be joined -- gradually -- by the other wives mentioned.
Not only does this new story revision mean reconceiving the arc of the season, but it also means an expansion to the current cast.
So far, the series stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Betty Grissom), Odette Annable (Trudy Cooper), Erin Cummings (Marge Slayton), Azure Parsons (Annie Glenn), Zoe Boyle (Jo Schirra) and Desmond Harrington (Alan Shepherd).
Savage will executive produce ‘Astronaut Wives Club’ with ‘Gossip Girl’ colleague Josh Schwartz, ‘Hart of Dixie’s Len Goldstein, and ‘Milk’s Michael London and Janice Williams. Nick Cassavetes (‘The Notebook’) is set to direct the first episode.
