Calling all comedy writers!
NBC is turning to A-list comedy producers and stars to help search for new comedy talent for potential series through a contest called 'NBC Comedy Playground.'
'Comedy Playground' is billed as a "grassroots initiative" and designed to give all hopeful comedy writers in the U.S. the opportunity to bring their concepts from first pitch to the actual air. The celebrity team of advisors will help two lucky winners create their original comedies that will be given a series order and broadcast on NBC in summer 2015.
The A-list team is as follows: Aziz Ansari, Jason Bateman, Robert Carlock, Sean Hayes, Mindy Kaling, Jason Katims, Josh Lieb, Eva Longoria, Adam McKay, Seth Meyers, Todd Milliner, Will Packer, Amy Poehler, Craig Robinson, Maya Rudolph, Mike Schur, Adam Scott and Mike Shoemaker.
Wow. There are so many things I would do in order to be in a room with all of that talent.
If you are wondering when and where, starting May 1, comedy writers can begin submitting ideas for proposed digital and network comedy series. Participants are able to submit up to two 5-10 minute video samples of previous work and up to two 2-5 minute original video pitches here.
After the submissions are received, an NBC selection panel will select the 10 finalists. It gets even better, as NBC will fund each finalist to help them produce pilot presentations. Next, two winners will be chosen and have their dreams come true.
Meanwhile, the eight finalists that were not chosen will have their pilots voted on by the public, and the winner will develop their project as a digital series for NBC.
For those who would like to see the actual process of the contest, NBC's Jennifer Salke said that conversations were had about making 'Comedy Playground's process into its own show. She noted, "We thought about that. Let's wait til next year."
It could be like 'The Voice' for comedy writers. I’d watch that.
