Another actress is blasting off into the 1960s space race!
Dominique McElligott, known for her role as Lily Bell on AMC’s ‘Hell on Wheels,’ recently landed herself the lead role of Louise Shepard on ABC’s ‘Astronaut Wives Club.’ Wife to Alan Shepard (‘Dexter’s Desmond Harrington) aka the first American in space, she is described as a real-life “Sabrina” coming from a father who was the head of maintenance at the Duponts’ Longwood Gardens estate. Her “perfect” image and intensely private life become a struggle once Alan enters the space race spotlight.
Alan and Louise remained married for 53 years, and it was one of the few marriages that survived the space program. Despite staying together, according to Lily Koppel’s book, which the show is based, Alan didn’t make married life easy for Louise, as he was known for his many sexual indiscretions.
From ‘Gossip Girl’s Stephanie Savage, the 1960s-drama depicts the story of the women married to American heroes and astronauts during the height of the space race.
Originally, the 10-episode series was set to debut this summer, but the network bumped it to midseason to expand on the show’s concept and cast. It will continue to showcase the Mercury Seven wives, but now it will also chronicle the lives of the Gemini and Apollo mission crews’ spouses.
So far, the series stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Betty Grissom), Odette Annable (Trudy Cooper), Erin Cummings (Marge Slayton), Azure Parsons (Annie Glenn) and Zoe Boyle (Jo Schirra).
