Sigmund Freud to Get TV Treatment from 'Downton Abbey' Producer and 'X-Files' Scribe

A "Freudian slip" takes on a whole different meaning with the announcement that a 'Downton Abbey' producer, Carnival Films, and former 'The X-Files' scribe, Frank Spotnitz, will be developing a crime series centered on the famed father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud.

The series, called 'Freud: The Secret Casebook,' will portray the Austrian neurologist as the world's first criminal profiler. Set in early 20th century Vienna, the series will combine the elements of a murder mystery, as Freud uses his new theories about human behavior to solve crimes (I'm guessing he will deduce that they're all neurotic people who may or may have a thing for their parents!). The series will also explore the psychoanalysts's "tangled and provocative" personal life (for those who need a brush-up on their Freud history, apparently he had an affair with his sister-in-law, and he was an early proponent of cocaine usage for mental and physical problems).

Spotnitz, who moved to the U.K. for the Cinemax/BBC series 'Hunted' and recently launched a U.K.-based production company, will pen the pilot script with Nicholas Meyer ('Houdini').

Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant of Carnival Films ('Downton Abbey') will exec-produce, along with Alan Gasmer ('Vikings') and Matt Baer ('Unbroken'), as well as Christian Popp and Alexander Keil of Germany-based Producers at Work.

The project is currently out to cast and find directors. Paging Dr. Frasier Crane?
