HBO, BBC Team Up to Produce J.K. Rowling's 'Casual Vacancy'

J.K. Rowling is bringing her writing wizardry to TV. The 'Harry Potter' author is teaming with HBO and BBC to produce her (adult) novel, 'The Casual Vacancy,' into a three-hour miniseries.

The novel (which was Rowling's follow-up to the 'Harry Potter' series) centers on the seemingly idyllic English village, Pagford. But, as everyone knows, one must not judge a book by its cover (even a J.K. Rowling novel). Behind its cobblestone roads and beautiful abbeys, there's a war going on in Pagford. The war between rich vs. poor, teenagers vs. parents, wives vs. husbands, students vs. teachers, etc.

Sarah Phelps ('EastEnders') has penned the adaptation of the book, and Jonny Campbell ('In the Flesh') is set to direct.

Rowling will executive produce via her production company, Bronte Film and Television, that she runs with her longtime literary agent (and one very rich man), Neil Blair, who will also serve as producer. Ruth Kenley-Letts ('The Hour') alongside Paul Trijbits ('Saving Mr. Banks,' 'Dancing on the Edge') and Rick Senat are all set to produce as well.

The series is a co-production with BBC. Despite the novel's mixed reviews, BBC optioned the rights to the best-selling novel (it's sold more than six million copies worldwide) in 2012.

Filming will begin this summer in southwest England.

'Casual Vacancy' joins the long list of miniseries that HBO has found a tremendous amount of success with, including the wildly popular Matthew McConaughey/Woody Harrelson 'True Detective' drama and the seven-hour (!) miniseries, 'Criminal Justice,' starring John Turturro.
