The cast of ABC’s ‘Astronaut Wives Club’ is continuing to expand! It has been announced that ‘Newsroom’ alum Joel Johnstone has joined the drama from ‘Gossip Girl’s Stephanie Savage.
Savage and director Nick Cassavetes will help tell the true story of the women who encouraged some of the biggest heroes in American history during the pinnacle of the '60s space race. The series is the first pilot Savage has written since she co-created ‘Gossip Girl’ with Josh Schwartz.

As for Johnstone, he is slated to play astronaut Gus Grissom; a man who proves himself to be one of NASA’s top men despite being an average student and athlete. He not only develops into an accomplished engineer who flies in the Mercury and Gemini missions, but also becomes the first man to go into space twice!
Johnstone's leading lady is 'Once Upon a Time's JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who will play his dear wife, Betty Grissom. The extensive cast also includes Zoe Boyle (Jo Schirra), Odette Annable (Trudy Cooper), Azure Parsons (Annie Glenn), Dominique McElligott (Louise Shepard), Desmond Harrington (Alan Shepard), Bret Harrison (Gordon Cooper) and Erin Cummings (Marge Slayton).

And if you're thinking Johnstone’s attractive self looks rather familiar, it’s because he’s had a slew of recurring roles on shows such as Lifetime’s upcoming project ‘Deliverance Creek,’ as well as HBO’s ‘Getting On’ and Disney’s ‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.’ He has also made a guest appearance on ABC’s ‘Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’
It has also been announced that there will be a delay in production — the series will now be in the syndicated orbit for the 2014-2015 midseason.
