Ramón Gerard Antonio Estévez, know known as Martin Sheen, was born August 3, 1940 in Dayton, Ohio. Sheen wanted to be an actor from an early age, but his father wanted more for his son. In order to pursue his dream career, Martin purposely flunked the University of Dayton entrance exam, then moved to New York City. There he landed his first role in the Broadway production of The Subject Was Roses.
From there, Sheen didn't receive another role until he landed a part in the 1973 drama Badlands. But after his movie role, his career began to take off. Sheen soon landed the role of Private Eddie Slovik in the popular television movie, The Execution of Private Slovik, which earned him an Emmy for Best Actor in a Television Drama. After winning an Emmy, Sheen appeared in popular movies including Apocalypse Now, Gandhi, The American President, and Catch Me If You Can, as well as hundreds of guest star appearances on popular television shows.
Sheen is also an outspoken political activist and has been arrested 63 times for protesting against various issues. Recently he campaigned for Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry.
As well as being an actor and an activist, Sheen is also a husband and a father. He married his wife, Janet, in 1961 and have had four children together: Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Ramon Estevez, and Renee Estevez, all of whom are actors.
Sheen's most recent television credit was that of President Jed Bartlet on NBC's The West Wing.
